The Chain bridge is a suspension bridge, and it connects Buda and Pest. It becomes the symbol of the Hungarian capital. The bridge was build by an englishman named William Tierney Clark. The construction works began in 1839 and continued for ten years, the foundation stone was placed in 1842 and the bridge was completed in 1849, but it was open to traffic a lot earlier.
The construction works consumed a high amount of money, with the total amount was nearly 6.57 million forints. The structure consisted of 2146 tons of iron, for a long time it was the world's biggest suspension bridge with a length of 380 meters and a width of 14.5 meters. The Chain Bridge has been reconstructed on numerous occasions, the steel stucture was reinforced in 1914 and 1919, while the iron chains were changed to carbon iron.
The bridge suffered the most damage during the Second World War on the 18 January 1945, the reconstruction works began in 1947. They strived to reconstruct the bridge according to the original plans, making it possible of serving the city's increasing human and vehicle traffic.
The 160 years old bridge is one of the most precious treasures of Budapest and Hungary, there is still a lot of trafficc on the bridge every day.
