Parliament Buildings

São Bento Palace

The Palácio de São Bento, “Saint Benedict's Palace”, is the home of the Assembly of the Republic, the Portuguese parliament. It is located in Lisbon. Close to Bairro Alto, the Palace of São Bento was formerly known as the seat of the National Assembly during the “Estado Novo” regime. Nearby is the official residence of Portugal’s Prime Minister.

Just behind the main building there is a mansion that serves as residence for the Prime Minister of Portugal. The mansion, dated from 1877, was built within the garden of the old monastery. It has been the Prime Minister's official residence since 1938, when Salazar moved in.

Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank of the Danube River, in Budapest. It is currently the largest building in Hungary.

Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the National Assembly resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing the supreme and independent authority of the nation. An international competition was held, and Imre Steindl emerged as the winner. Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904.

About one thousand people were involved in construction, during which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kilograms of gold were used. After World War II the diet became single-chambered and today the government uses only a small portion of the building. During the communist regime a red star perched on the top of the dome, but was removed in 1990. Mátyás Szurös declared the Hungarian Republic from the balcony facing Lajos Kossuth Square on 23d October in 1989.

Curiosity :

The architect (Steindl) of the Hungarian Parliament went blind before its completion and died in 1902 in Budapest.

Lisbon Bridges

25 of April Bridge

The 25 of April Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the south side of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6 of 1966 and a train platform was added in 1999. Because of its similar color, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. In fact, it was built by the same company (American Bridge Company) that constructed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 20th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper platform carries six car lanes, the lower platform two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge.

  • Altitude to the water : 70 m

  • Daily traffic : 150 000 cars / 157 trains

Vasco da Gama Bridge

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and range views that spans the Tejo River near Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe, and ninth longest in the world, with a total length of 17.2 km, including 0.829 km for the main bridge, 11.5 km in viaducts, and 4.8 km in dedicated access roads. Its purpose is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's other bridge (25 of April Bridge), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon. The bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, 18 months after construction first began, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge

The Chain bridge is a suspension bridge, and it connects Buda and Pest. It becomes the symbol of the Hungarian capital. The bridge was build by an englishman named William Tierney Clark. The construction works began in 1839 and continued for ten years, the foundation stone was placed in 1842 and the bridge was completed in 1849, but it was open to traffic a lot earlier.

The construction works consumed a high amount of money, with the total amount was nearly 6.57 million forints. The structure consisted of 2146 tons of iron, for a long time it was the world's biggest suspension bridge with a length of 380 meters and a width of 14.5 meters. The Chain Bridge has been reconstructed on numerous occasions, the steel stucture was reinforced in 1914 and 1919, while the iron chains were changed to carbon iron.

The bridge suffered the most damage during the Second World War on the 18 January 1945, the reconstruction works began in 1947. They strived to reconstruct the bridge according to the original plans, making it possible of serving the city's increasing human and vehicle traffic.

The 160 years old bridge is one of the most precious treasures of Budapest and Hungary, there is still a lot of trafficc on the bridge every day.
