The 25 of April Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the south side of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6 of 1966 and a train platform was added in 1999. Because of its similar color, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. In fact, it was built by the same company (American Bridge Company) that constructed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 20th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper platform carries six car lanes, the lower platform two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge.
Altitude to the water : 70 m
Daily traffic : 150 000 cars / 157 trains
The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and range views that spans the Tejo River near Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe, and ninth longest in the world, with a total length of 17.2 km, including 0.829 km for the main bridge, 11.5 km in viaducts, and 4.8 km in dedicated access roads. Its purpose is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's other bridge (25 of April Bridge), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon. The bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, 18 months after construction first began, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
