The Palácio de São Bento, “Saint Benedict's Palace”, is the home of the Assembly of the Republic, the Portuguese parliament. It is located in Lisbon. Close to Bairro Alto, the Palace of São Bento was formerly known as the seat of the National Assembly during the “Estado Novo” regime. Nearby is the official residence of Portugal’s Prime Minister.
Just behind the main building there is a mansion that serves as residence for the Prime Minister of Portugal. The mansion, dated from 1877, was built within the garden of the old monastery. It has been the Prime Minister's official residence since 1938, when Salazar moved in.

Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the National Assembly resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing the supreme and independent authority of the nation. An international competition was held, and Imre Steindl emerged as the winner. Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904.
About one thousand people were involved in construction, during which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kilograms of gold were used. After World War II the diet became single-chambered and today the government uses only a small portion of the building. During the communist regime a red star perched on the top of the dome, but was removed in 1990. Mátyás Szurös declared the Hungarian Republic from the balcony facing Lajos Kossuth Square on 23d October in 1989.
Curiosity :
The architect (Steindl) of the Hungarian Parliament went blind before its completion and died in 1902 in Budapest.
